The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has changed the dates for the start of voter registration exercise for the 2019 tripartite elections.
Chief Elections Officer, Sammy Alufandika disclosed this in a statement on May 2, 2018.
The decision has come following complaints that were submitted by the stakeholders during the National Elections Consultative Forum (NECOF) and a meeting it conducted with the Center for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) board.
Among other complaints raised by the stakeholders were, timeliness that the commission set, sighting that they needed ample time for better preparation in order for their operations to be effective.
Therefore, the commission resolved that the commencement of the registration will begin on the June 26 and will end on the October 4 in six phase across the nation.
The Commission has therefore urged all citizens of the country who did not register during the mass national identity card registration to go to the National Registration Bureau Offices and register as the registration will use particulars from the national IDs.
“All stake holders are also reminded that the commission will register only those that will have attained 18 years and above by the October 4, 2018, which is last day of the voter registration exercise.
The Biometric Voter Registration kits have been programmed to reject registration of nay minor” reads part of the statement.
The Commission has therefore asked all stakeholders to plan their activities in line with the revised elections calendar.
