Three men are in police custody in Lilongwe for being found in possession of fake bank notes amounting to K384, 000.
Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Laban Makalani said the three suspects were arrested at a drinking joint in Area 50.
The three suspects identified as Precious Kathyanga (35), Chikondano Phiri (27) and Chipiliro Phiri (19), were found with fake Malawian currency which were in K2, 000 fake notes.
Sub Inspector Makalani said: “A team of police detectives from Kanengo Police Station led by the Station Criminal Investigations Officer, Inspector Gift Mwahara, arrested the trio after receiving a tip from well-wishers.
“During the time of arrest, the suspects were buying beer using the said fake notes. All the notes are bearing one serial number; AA7750735.”
The trio will appear before the court soon to answer a charge of selling articles bearing designs in imitation of currency contrary to section 382 of the penal code.
All the culprits come from the area of Traditional Authority Kabudula and have pleaded guilty to the charges.
Makalani said investigations have been intensified to establish the source of the notes.
Meanwhile the police is advising all the Members of the general public to check relevant security features on bank notes whenever they are transacting to avoid being duped.
