A gang of armed robbers have ransacked DMI-St John the Baptist University campus, a catholic church run university in Lilongwe on Wednesday at around midnight.
Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Labani Makalani, confirmed the incident saying the robbers went away with undisclosed amount of money, laptops and cellphones.
He said the gang whom according to information gathered by the police, were a more than ten in number, were armed with different types of dangerous weapons including Panga knives.
Sub Inspector Makalani said: “In the process the robbers overpowered the guard on duty and tied him using ropes before invading the girl’s hostels where they robbed the students’ items such as laptop computers and cellphones.”
He further said after robbing the students, the gang went on and invaded one of the university’s office where they stole undisclosed amount of money.
Police investigations are still under way to come up with the actual amount of goods and money stolen during the robbery.
No injuries were recorded during the incident and no arrests have been made as the police are still man-hunting the robbers.
Meanwhile the police have appeared to the general public to come forward with any valuable information which may lead to the arrest of the suspected robbers or recovery of the stolen items.
In February 2016, another DMI University campus in Mangochi was attacked and set on fire by the surrounding angry villagers who went mad after a student from the institution was allegedly killed one of the villagers in a fracas which erupted between the two sides.
