Three police officers have been arrested for allegedly breaking into one of the offices at Lumbadzi Police Station in Lilongwe and stealing assorted items.
Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer, Labani Makalani, has confirmed the arrest but declined to shed more-light saying he is yet to come up with more information.
Reports gathered by YFM online, reveal that the officers are Assistant Superintendent Getrude Mukhondiya of Central Region Police Headquarters, Inspector Donnex Munthali and Inspector Phandama both of Lumbadzi Police Sub-station.
The stolen items were kept by the police after being seized from Lilongwe city and the surrounding areas following a recent operation.
Malawi Police Service (MPS) in collaboration with Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) and Malawi Pharmacy and Poisons Board carried out an operation which was dubbed operation “Afiya” from May 16 to 18 this year to seize suspected items.
After the operation, the seized items were kept at one of the offices at Lumbadzi Police station.
The reports further disclosed that on May 20 at around 11:20hrs the office was broken into and that some items were stolen.
Following the incident the police launched an investigation which led to the arrest of the three officers on Wednesday, May 22 in connection with the theft.
During the arrest, the police have managed to recover some items which were stolen including cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, one HP laptop computer and five bottles of spirit beer of 750mls each.
Currently inquiries are still in progress.
In recent years the country has been experiencing incidents which implicated police officers in criminal activities, a development which has made most people lose trust in the country’s security system.
