Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) says it will offer financial support to its female aspirants in the forthcoming tripartite elections.
The move is aimed at ensuring more women representation as Councilors and Members of Parliament (MPs) in the 2019 polls.
UDF General Secretary, Kandi Padambo said as a party they will begin by lowering the fee which candidates pay to contest in primary elections.
“Our female representatives will have the privilege of paying an amount lower than for men during party primaries just to make sure their representation is high,” he said.
Padambo said they will also help the women in paying 50% of the nomination fees to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
During the 2014 tripartite elections UDF paid nomination fees amounting to K35 million.
Currently the party has at least a 40% of women representation in its structures.
