Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA) says it is doing everything possible to encourage persons with disabilities to contest in different positions in the upcoming tripartite elections.
Head of Programs for the organization, Symon Munde said this in a telephone interview with YFM as campaign for inclusive participation in the elections gains momentum.
He said among others, the organization is engaging different political parties to give chance to people with disabilities as they are also agents of development.
“Some political parties are giving us a listening ear and some are not but we believe that after final talks some of our members will be given the chance,” Munde said.
He disclosed that they have also started building confidence in their members to stand out and show people that they can.
Munde cited an example of Mangochi Central parliamentarian, Clement Chiwaya, as an inspiration to many persons with disabilities in the country.
He therefore urged people to give a chance to persons with disabilities in various positions.
The current representation of persons with disabilities in Parliament and councils is beyond pathetic.
