The Department of Fisheries has expressed concern over the decline of Chambo fish stocks in Lake Malawi and other water bodies.
Speaking to YFM, the Department’s Acting Director, Friday Njaya said: “The decline has come due to the environmental damage that has become over many rivers and lakes in the country”.
“For the past years Chambo has been scarce due to among other things, illegal fishing in Lake Malawi.”
“But currently we are on track since fishermen are now abiding by the laws which were set like observing the closed season,” Njaya said.
He further said as a Department they conduct patrols just to make sure that the fish breed.
“We are also encouraging aquaculture in making sure that various fish species are preserved,” Njaya added.
