The bodies of two fishermen who went missing after drowning in Shire River at Kamuzu Barrage in Liwonde have been recovered.
Speaking to YFM, Public Relations Officer for Machinga Police Station, Constable Davie Sulumba said: “The two are Dalitso Nyirenda of Sitima village and Yusuf Dickson of Chasuchira village both aged 31.”
“The two went missing last Friday on June 8,” Sulumba said.
He further said the body of Dickson was recovered on Sunday while the body of Nyirenda was found on Monday morning.
“On Friday afternoon they went fishing in the said river and they decided to go close to gate number 5 of Kamuzu Barrage using a boat and due to heavy flow of water the boat got capsized and they both got drowned,” he said.
Sulumba added that postmortem results conducted at Machinga District Hospital proved that death was due to suffocation.
“Police is therefore advising fishermen in the district to avoid fishing near the barrage,” he said.
