Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Roy Kachale Banda has asked the government to ensure depoliticisation of the infamous K4 billion fund for development projects.
This follows continued accountability concerns over the payout to parliamentarians through district councils for community managed socio-economic projects in their constituencies.
Banda called on government to make sure that the funds have benefited all community members regardless of their political affiliation.
“There is a tendency by some government officials to politicize public funds therefore those of us coming from opposition parties are shun from having access,” the Peoples Party (PP) parliamentarian for Zomba Malosa said.
Zomba district council has received K183 million with each of the nine constituencies receiving a sum of not less than K20 million.
However, Banda said the guidelines for the operations of the fund will not achieve transparency.
“The process of utilization of the fund is rather wrong and cumbersome. The process should have been streamlined so that these funds are used efficiently and transparently,” he added.
