Police in Blantyre have arrested four men for possession of ivory at Khuluvi lodge along Chileka road.
Blantyre Police Public Relations Officer Augustus Nkhwazi identified the men as John Chimowa, 39, from Chiradzulu, Innocent Banda, 24, from Dedza, Isaac Mustafa, 35 and Fred Thom, 32, from Chikwawa district.
Nkhwazi said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday after a tip.
“Acting on a tip from members of the public, Police detectives searched the room at the said lodge and motor vehicle which was being used by the four.”
Nkhwazi said four pieces of ivory weighing 10.6 kilograms were discovered during the search
He said that it is believed the four were looking for buyers of the said pieces of ivory.
“The suspects have since been charged with Illegal Possession of Listed Species which is contrary to section 86 (1) as read with section 110 A (b) of National Parks and Wildlife Act,” Nkhwazi said.
