The First Magistrate Court in Kasungu has sentenced a 33-year-old man identified as Charles Nkhoma to 4 years imprisonment for selling for offering his sister for sale as a slave.
State prosecutor, Inspector Griffin Luhanga told the court that on July 09 2018, the accused was allegedly offering his sister for sale to Moffat Banda, 45 who has a Maize mill at Ndonda Trading Center.
“He first approached Banda that he was looking for work. After Banda had told Nkhoma that he had no work for him, he surprisingly told Banda that he was then offering his sister for sale at a price of K180,000, ” Luhanga explained.
He added: “Getting suspicious with Nkhoma’s sentiment Banda reported the matter to Police who after making some immediate enquiries arrested him.”
Appearing in court, the accused pleaded guilty to the charge.
However, in his submission before sentence Inspector Luhanga pleaded with the court to impose stiffer punishment on the accuse citing such behavior is inhuman and cannot be tolerated in the society.
Passing his judgment, his worship First Grade Magistrate Damiano Banda concurred with the state hence sentenced Nkhoma 4 years imprisonment with hard labour.
Charles Nkhoma hails from Vikacha village, Traditional Authority Kapelula in Kasungu district.
