Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has expressed the need for the youth who are the majority in the country’s population, to register in large numbers in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said registering for 2019 tripartite election is the only way of shaping the country’s future.
The remarks follows reports that most youths are shunning the voter registration exercise, citing failure by the Members of Parliament and ward councilors in delivering their promises.
The third phase of the voter registration exercise is under way in Lilongwe district and Lilongwe city and is expected to end on August 12.
Mwafulirwa however said the youth should take up their role in removing duty bearers who have not delivered.
“This is an opportune time to again choose a leader of their choice. Now if you decide not to register and vote you should not be surprised to see the very same people returning their seats.”
“As youths we need to stand up and take our rightful role. Those of us who have turned 18 or will turn 18 by November 9 2018 will have an opportunity that if MEC opens the registration earlier-please go in your large numbers to register.
