Eye of the child has described the continued presence of children in the country’s prisons as “shocking and disturbing”.
Executive Director for the organization, Maxwell Matewere told YFM that despite the court ruling in June this year that no child should be found in prison, a number of children are still in prisons four months after the ruling.
“We are really concerned that we still have a large number of children that are being kept in prison under the Malawi prison service, this is sad and disturbing,” Matewere said.
He also added that this is a violation of child rights and further urged authorities to uphold the rule of law.
“We would have really loved to see the Malawi prison to implement the order, putting children in prison is very pathetic so may they please respect the law,” he added.
