Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) says it is prepared to plant trees in the 2018-2019 rainy seasons around Mulunguzi and Mpira dams to ensure sustainability of water provision to its clients.
SRWB Public Relations Officer Rita Makwangwala told YFM Online that they are collaborating with the forestry department to protect the water sources by planting trees, weeding and making fire breaks.
“As Southern Region Water Board planting trees is an ongoing activity we do it annually,” Makwangwala said while adding:” As of now we are searching for a place where trees have been destroyed by bush fires and careless cut down so that we plant new seedling come this rainy season.”
However, Makwangwala pleaded with the communities to take their rightful role in protecting trees by avoiding a bush fires and wanton cutting down of trees around its water sources.
“We are doing sensitization meetings with the communities surrounding our catchment areas so that they should bear in mind how trees are vital to in as as water provision is concerned,” Makhwangwala added.
