Zomba district council has expressed commitment in uplifting the welfare of the youth in the district.
Youth District Officer (DYO) Kettie Mwandira, made the remarks on Wednesday during Youth Day commemoration at the district level held at Chilipa Primary School in Sub-TA Mkapita area.
The event started with, a big walk from Chilipa trading centre to Chilipa primary school ground.
Mwandira said the event was aimed at giving chance for the youth to showcase different skills and also voice out challenges they face.
She further said his office in collaboration with Non-Governmental Organizations working in the district have already started introducing youth programs to equip the youth with different skills for them to be self-reliance.
“We are running different programs to empower the youth through technical skills through non-governmental organizations working in the district,” Mwandira said.
She disclosed plans to construct recreation centers in all Traditional Authorities in the district in a bid to achieve safe spaces for the youth.
On his part, youth parliamentarian for Zomba Malosa constituency, David Milambe who was the guest of honor at the event, stressed the need for the country to prioritize youth development.
“The government and all stakeholders must make sure that they are including youth in all decision making process so that they can also be assisted to their needs easily,” he said.
Milambe urged the youth to be responsible citizens so that people can consider them by giving them chance to prove their wealth.
Sub-TA Mkapita who was also present at the meeting expressed concern over the high drop out of school due to wrong distance.
He also grabbed an opportunity to ask government to consider his area by constructing a community college in his area so as to equip the youth with vocational skills.
This year’s commemoration was under the theme “Creating Safe Spaces for the Youth”.
