Police in Chikwawa district have arrested two men for illegal possession of two pieces of ivory valued at over K10 million.
The seized ivory is weighing over 12 kilograms.
Chikwawa Police Station spokesperson, Foster Benjamin identified the suspects as businessman Felix Chagunda, 26 and Gift Zachepa, 39, a motorcycle tax operator.
Benjamin said the suspects were netted during an operation jointly organized by the police and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.
He said that the operation followed a tip that some suspected men were dealing with ivory trophies at Nchalo Trading Centre.
“Following the tip, the police in conjunction with parks and wildlife officials arrested the suspects before seizing the raw ivory from Chagunda’s house,” Benjamin said.
Both Chagunda and Zachepa comes from the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa district.
