UTM party Director of Youth Bon Kalindo, popularly known as Winiko, will spend the weekend in police custody in Zomba while waiting for his bail hearing.
Kalindo appeared before the Zomba Magistrates Court at 4pm on Friday to answer two counts of disorderly conduct and insulting the head of state.
Police arrested the Mulanje parliamentarian in Lilongwe on Thursday.
Lawyer representing Kalindo, Kondwani Kamitengo expressed his disappointment that the court did not grant him bail as they had expected.
Chief Resident Magistrate Mzondi Mvula said that he will make his ruling on Monday January 14, 2019 on whether Kalindo should be granted bail or not as pleaded by the state.
According to National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera, Kalindo committed the offences at Balaka Police Station after the detention of two aides of Vice President Saulos Chilima over the weekend.
On Friday afternoon, UTM supporters engaged in a heated confrontation with police officers at Eastern Region Police Headquaters in Zomba where Kalindo was held awaiting his court appearance.
