The Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining says is yet to find remedies to the deadly anthrax disease that continues to kill hippos at Liwonde National Park.
Speaking to YFM, the Ministry’s Spokesperson Sangwani Phiri said they have involved various stakeholders including the ministry of health and veterinary department to find the root cause and lasting solutions to the problem.
“We have not yet found any remedies to the disease, all we have done is involve stakeholders including the veterinary and ministry of health to help us to get to the root cause of the disease.”
“We also intend to trace the carrier of the disease and lasting solutions to avoid a replica of what has befallen us,” he added.
Phiri also said over 40 hippos have already been declared dead.
“So far above 40 hippos have already died at the park which is a huge blow in wildlife conservation and tourist attraction in the country.”
Anthrax is a deadly and contagious disease which is spread through consumption of infected animals or through body contact with the infected animal.
