The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has condemned the tendency of most traditional leaders of endorsing political aspirants for the May 21, 2019 Tripartite Elections.
A statement made available to YFM signed by the commission’s Chief Election’s Officer, Sam Alfandika, the conduct is outlawed in the country.
The statement said traditional leaders are not supposed to be partisan and should not be affiliated with political parties or candidates with an intention of influencing their subjects.
“The conduct is an offence and punishable by a fine of K500, 000 and imprisonment to two years for any person who denies any political party or candidate equal treatment with any other political party or candidate,” the statement reads.
The commission has warned that it will be compelled to take action against chiefs who endorse candidates during the campaign period.
