Political detainees during the one party era have given the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Dr Lazarus Chakwera a 7-day ultimatum to compensate and apologize to them.
Ex- Detainees’ Association of Malawi chairperson, Sangwani Mkandawire said they are taking the party to task following their unfruitful discussions with the Office of the Ombudsman and Parliament.
Mkandawire further said the apology by the party’s president Dr Lazarus Chakwera for the atrocities they suffered during the one party regime, was not formal hence the ultimatum.
He said if Dr Chakwera fails to honour their demands they will hold vigils at MCP headquarters from April 20-22 this year.
But commenting on the matter, MCP spokesperson, Reverend Morris Munthali said the association’s demands are not constitutional.
He said the matter was presented to government and it is government’s responsibility to compensate the people and not a political party.
Recently the Ombudsman Martha Chizuma met the parliamentary legal committee where among others they asked the committee to take to task government to comply with her ruling to compensate the victims.
