The inter-Unit Sports Festival, dubbed 93 Infantry inter-Brigade 2019 Sports Festival, has been launched at Cobbe Barracks in Zomba on Tuesday and will wind up on Friday, May 3.
The festival, has been organized to select Malawi Defence Force (MDF) teams from the 93 Brigade, to represent southern region at an army level competition to be held in Salima to compete with their counterparts across the country.
Teams from different sports disciplines participating in the festival are Cobbe Barracks, Changalume Barracks, Administration Unit and Field Artillery Battery (FAB) unit.
All the four teams taking part in the competition have representatives from different sports disciplines including football, netball, basketball, volleyball, tug of war, athletics and darts.
Cobbe Barracks Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Cedrick Kathumba, said apart from selecting teams to represent the 93 Infantry Brigade in Salima, the festival will also help to encourage soldiers to take part in sporting activities to keep themselves fit.
Lieutenant Colonel Kathumba said: “Our shared vision is to be a robust force characterized by proficiency, resourcefulness and high standard of discipline and I recognize that sport is part of training and promotes a fighting spirit among the soldiers.”
On Tuesday’s semifinal football games, Cobbe Barracks Administration Unit and FAB have qualified into semifinal stage while in netball, Administration Unit and Cobbe Barracks sailed through to the semifinals.
FAB and Cobbe Barracks volleyball teams are also through to the semi-finals.
The final matches will take place on Friday while third place games will be played on Thursday.
In Athletics a long time athlete, Kephus Kasten, emerged the winner in a 400 m race in men’s category while Charity Wakhama won in women’s category.
The 93 Infantry Brigade Inter-Unit Sports Festival is an event which is organized every year.
