The Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education (CYECE) has hailed government’s move to consider 3,800 youths who are on government internship program to be on full time employment.
CYECE Executive Director Lucky Mbewe said the move is a milestone towards youth empowerment in the country.
Government through the principal secretary in the ministry of Labour, Joseph Mwandidya made the announcement on May 9, 2019 following pressure from the interns to put them on permanent employment.
“It’s a commendable development looking at the time that we are in, unemployment rate is a critical issue,” said Mbewe.
However Mbewe has appealed to the government to consider maximizing the number of interns in the program as only 3,800 youth’s were recruited instead of 5,000 youth’s who were targeted.
“We thank the government and appeal for more interns to considered because the government is the main employer aside the private sector otherwise this is very worthy to appreciate,” he said.
