Mzuzu University (Mzuni) has changed the venue for its graduation ceremony slated for Friday July 19 from Mzuzu Stadium to Thengere ground which is located in the university’s campus for security reasons.
Confirming the development to YFM, Mzuni deputy spokesperson Chuck Mwale, said the development follows the nationwide demonstrations organized by Human Rights Defenders Coalition-HRDC which are also slated for the same day, despite the city council issuing HRDC a letter to postpone the demos.
“Mzuzu City Council sent a letter to Human Right Defenders Coalition asking them to reschedule their day for demonstrations.
“However, until today we still have not gotten any response and as Mzuni we have decided to change venue and use Thengere ground,” Mwale explained.
However, HRDC chairperson, Timothy Mtambo, has denied receiving the letter from the city council asking them to reschedule the demos.
Meanwhile, police in the Northern Region have assured people in the region that they will provide maximum security during demonstrations as Mzuni will also be holding a graduation ceremony.
Northern Region Police publicist Peter Kalaya said they are working with the organizers to ensure that people’s lives and property will be safeguarded.
“I understand we have two events in the city, demonstrations as well as graduation, we are ready to protect people’s lives and properties. Besides, that we are working hand in hand with organizers of the demos,”
