Rainy Water Harvesting Association of Malawi RWHAM) has launched a Road for Water initiative that will see rainy water in the roads being used for agricultural purposes.
Chairperson for the association Macpherson Nthala said the initiative will divert running water from road sites into farmers’ fields to enhance crop production.
Nthala said the initiative will also minimize the impact of run-off water which causes land degradation.
He said the association has engaged the media and governmental extension workers to help spread the message of the initiative to local farmers.
The association also advocates for rainwater harvesting systems that collect water using existing structures such as rooftops, parking lots and flood plains.
