President Peter Mutharika’s departure to New York City for the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, will coincide with Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) country wide anti-Jane Ansah demonstrations.
A statement from Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ministry released on Sunday, confirmed Mutharika’s departure for United States, while the HRDC leadership has also set Wednesday as the day to start their 2 days protests.
Addressing the media in Lilongwe on Tuesday, the HRDC said all is set for the Coalition to hold the anti-Jane Ansah protests from Wednesday to Friday this week in all the country’s cities and some selected districts.
The announcement by HRDC follows a reservation by the office of the Attorney General calling the demonstrations premature citing that the issue is still in court.
But HRDC member, Reverend MacDonald Sembereka, said the court gave them a 14 day- moratorium to discuss the matter, and that the said period has expired.
“It’s just an opinion that the attorney General is holding perhaps under some influence but the court’s direction was very clear on the 14 day moratorium and we obliged,” said Sembereka.
UNGA, which will run until September 30, is organised by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
The theme of the general debate will be “Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.
