The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will host the 21ST Annual General Conference of the Electoral Commissions for Southern African Development Countries (ECF SADC) from 22 to 27 September 2019.
A press statement released on September 20, and signed by ECF SADC President who is also MEC Chairperson, Justice Dr. Jane Ansah, said the conference will be held at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
The State Vice President, Right Honorable Everton Herbert Chimulirenji, will officially open the conference on Monday September 23, at 9:00AM.
Reads part of the statement: “Alongside the conference, the ECF SADC will also host one-day international seminar on “Enhancing the Credibility of Elections Through Observations.”
The ECF SADC is a network of Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) from 16 SADC countries; Uganda, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia South Africa, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Zimbabwe.
Malawi currently holds the presidency of the forum.
MEC is hosting the conference as the body alongside President Mutharika have been dragged to court by the country’s two opposition parties, Malawi Congress and UTM, over the disputed May 21 election results.
Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to September 30.
