Parliament has authorized government to borrow a whopping K112 billion from the International Development Association – IDA for electricity access project.
The project is expected to connect 5,000 households on the electricity grid.
Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha said it is important that government borrows the money which apart from reducing electricity challenges will also help to increase energy access from 11 percent to 30 percent.
However, Mwanamvekha was not clear on how the loan is going to be paid back.
Reacting to the development, Eisenhower Mkaka who spoke on behalf of Malawi Congress Party’s finance spokesperson said much as the move to develop the lacking energy sector is a good development, their worry is on how the loan will be repaid.
He said government is borrowing too much money which the future generation will struggle to pay back.
