The Mangochi Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced James Amosi to three years in prison for stealing national identity cards.
Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer Rodrick Maida said the Amosi was arrested last month after being found with different national identity cards at his house.
Maida said the court heard that on June 6, 2019 at around 6pm at Mpima Forest a woman identified as Patuma Saidi met four masked criminals who robbed her of a national identity card.
On 5 September, 2019 after Amosi was arrested at Chimwala, he was found with different national identity cards at his house including one belonging to Saidi.
Appearing before second grade magistrate Augustine Mezaya, the convict pleaded guilty to the charge and asked for leniency saying he was a bread winner.
But in his judgement, Mezaya sentenced the convict to 36 months imprisonment with hard labour.
Amos hails from Manyenje village in Traditional Authority Symon in Mwanza.
