Women’s rights groups under the banner of Women Manifesto marched in Lilongwe on Friday to express their anger over police sexual assault allegations.
The march started at Kamuzu central roundabout to Lilongwe Civic Offices where a petition was presented to the office of the president and ministries of homeland security and gender as a way of demanding justice on the issue.
The march follows allegations of defilement, rape and sexual assault of girls and women by some police officers in and around Nsundwe, M’bwatalika and Mpingu trading centres in Lilongwe three weeks ago.
There were also claims that police officers beat up people while showering them with obscenities.
Notable faces at the march include European Union (EU) ambassador to Malawi Sandra Paesen.
