Cargo transporters have asked government to put into operation a legislation that stipulates the percentage for awarding contracts to local transporters.
This follows an appeal made a month ago by truck owners to government to start awarding 60% transport contracts to Malawians as opposed to the current situation where foreigners are enjoying over 70% contracts.
Minister of Transport and Public Works Ralph Jooma said government is committed to working with a task force that has been established to look into matters suffocating transporters include the contract issue.
Chairperson for the Transporters Association of Malawi Lyton Dzombe said transporters are struggling to pay their workers and excel in business due to unfavourable environment characterised by limited contracts.
He therefore asked the transport ministry to avoid dragging feet in the implementation of the law so as to improve business for the local transporters.
