Outspoken academician turned politician Dr. Jessie Kabwila has been released on bail after spending three nights in police custody.
Dr. Kabwila was arrested on Saturday last week for inciting violence and threatening a panel of judges handling the presidential elections case.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shyreen Chirwa of the Lilongwe Magistrate court granted bail to Kabwila on Tuesday morning after production of K20,000 cash bond and two traceable sureties worth K200,000 non cash.
One of her lawyers Khwima Mchinzi said he will make sure that his client adheres to the court’s bail order.
In her speech during Thursday’s demonstrations which were organized by the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), warned that the country will be on fire if the judges will give a premature judgement on the case.
Kabwila is a member of UTM party which is protesting the outcome of the May 21 presidential elections.
