It does not get sweeter than this! Teams in the Southern Region Draughts League have all the reasons to smile following a cool K1 million sponsorship for the sport.
The league’s general secretary Suzgo Ngwira said the sponsorship is the first of its kind to be played in the league. He said the athletes were only active when there is a competition both local and international.
“We carried out a research and found out that the athletes could not do well in competitions both at home and abroad. The reason being that there was no motivation in the league they were playing. This sponsorship will help to uplift the standards of the sport,” he said.
He added that, so far, teams have already registered and games will start as soon as possible. In his remarks, chairperson of Draughts in Malawi, Peter Kaliyapa, commended the regional committee for pulling their resources together in order to come up with the sponsorship.
“The Southern Region Draights body needs a pat on the back for this initiative. It is hard to find sponsorship these days but this committee made contributions for the region. This sport needs support in order to grow,” said Kaliyapa.
