Junior officers in Malawi Prison Service (MPS) have started a nationwide sit-in demanding promotion and risk allowances among others.
In a statement, the warders said that they will close all prisons gates and force senior officers to operate from home saying should authorities threaten them, the situation will worsen all.
Reads part of the statement: ‘Any attempt by authorities to threaten us shall lead to worsening of the situation.’
Confirming the development to YFM, spokesperson for Malawi prisons, Chimwemwe Mike Shaba said they indeed received the letter and the management has called for a meeting with the officers.
“Management has indeed received by the police officers were among others they are grieving on issues of promotions, risk allowances, nepotism and unfair dismissals among others.
Shaba also said that the strike is happening in a few stations in the country.
Early this year, government through the ministry of homeland security promised to promote junior officers.
