An appeal has gone out to the Malawi Writers Union (MAWU) to revamp the writing industry in order to promote a writing culture among the youth.
The call has come from one of the writers in the country Pemphero Mphande who noted that the writing culture is slowly vanishing.
“The writing and reading cultures are facing challenges especially with the coming in of social media, people prefer to be on their phones.”
“The writers’ union should have been looking for young writers and assist them to publish their work,” said Mphande.
He also suggested that students or pupils writing competitions should be re-introduced.
“There used to be different competitions in the past, these promoted the two cultures among the youth so if there were to be brought back am sure things would improve,” said Mphande.
