Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) says its decision to hold demonstrations slated for May 28 still stands despite Malawi Electoral Commission- MEC chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah announcing her intention to resign.
HRDC National Coordinator- Luke Tembo said the aim of the demonstrations is not only to force Ansah out but all the MEC Commissioners and senior management at the commission.
“This is what -as HRDC- we have been fighting for in the previous 10 months but we cannot be quick to celebrate because we would like to see that she has indeed tendered her resignation.”
“Therefore the battle still continues until we see MEC commissioners and senior management out, as our move intends to clean the commission,” Tembo explained.
HRDC has however commended Ansah for her decision saying her move is what Malawians have always wanted.
The Coalition planned for fresh demonstrations to force Ansah to resign after the Supreme Court of Appeal quashed President Peter Mutharika and the Malawi electoral Commission application against the nullification of the May 21, 2019 presidential elections.
