The Citizens for Transformation (CFT) has issued a fresh demand for the immediate appointment of new Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officials following the stepping aside of chairperson Justice Jane Ansah.
CFT Communications and Public Relations Strategist Negracious Justine told YFM Online that it is only through timely appointment of credible electoral Chairperson and Commissioners that can lead to sound Presidential Election.
“Yes, we are aware that it’s only the Electoral Commission chairperson who has resigned so far, but our demand has been that both the Electoral Commission chairperson and the Commissioners should resign for being found incompetent by both the courts and parliament,” pressed for Justine.
Justine added that as days for the fresh poll are fast approaching, relevant stakeholders should be on the lookout in making sure that all electoral process are duly adhered to.
“We are demanding for the immediate appointment of new electoral commissioners, we believe that the process of appointing news commissioners should have begun now by engaging different political parties that are represented in Parliament,” said Justine.
In addition, the Movement is also seeking for auditing of the voters roll saying the current system is compromised.
“We have been demanding for the thorough audit of the data; voters roll and the result management system which was tendered in evidence during the trial proceedings of the presidential case that it is compromised, so we cannot go with such compromised system into the fresh presidential election,” said Justine.
Meanwhile, contracts for the remaining MEC commissioners are expected to expire in June this year.
