The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is meeting on Friday to liaise on President Peter Mutharika’s call to submit names of judges who can be considered for the position of chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec).
High Court and Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal Registrar, Agnes Patemba said among others the commission will discuss when to submit the names.
On Wednesday, Mutharika wrote the Judicial Service Commission and political parties requesting them to submit to his office names of nominated Judges and names of people who can be appointed as new MEC commissioners.
Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi, acknowledged receipt of the letter and said they will respond as soon as possible.
“I can confirm that we have received the letter and we will handle the matter with urgency,” Dausi said.
On the hand, Malawi Congress Party’s (Mapp) Publicity Secretary, Maurice Muthali described Mutharika’s move as a welcome development saying they have always been ready since the current commission was proven incompetent.
“As a party we are more than ready with the President’s call because the court found the current commissioners incompetent,” Munthali said.
As it stands, Malawi will go into presidential poll on June 23.
