Progress has been made on construction of the Solar Diesel hybrid plant at Chizumulu and Likoma Islands.
The project which is being implemented by Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) will generate 1.8 megawatts of power for the two islands.
Spokesperson for EGENCO, Moses Gwaza told YONECO FM online that despite some delays because of the Covid 19 pandemic, the project is taking shape.
“A lot of equipment and our engineers are from China so with the lock down progress of the project was affected,” said Gwaza.
“By the end of April we had 38% of work done at Likoma whereas at Chizumulu 31% of the work had be done.”
Once the project is completed, people of Likoma and Chizumulu Islands are expected to have 24 hours uninterrupted power supply.
EGENCO is expected to heavily reduce the cost of diesel fuel which it is currently to generate power at the two islands upon the completion of the project.
