The Malawi Electoral Commission has admitted that the code which was set for voter verification via SMS on mobiles phones is facing technical hitches.
The line, *720#, which has been set for registrants to verify their details through mobile phones is unable to operate due to a technical fault.
The commission opened a two day voter registration exercise in all centers from 10 to 11 June.
However, only those who are physically visiting the verification centers are able to be assisted.
MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said engineers and service providers are working tirelessly to resolve the problem.
Mwafulirwa said: “For those that were going to centers things went smoothly though we had some cases where people were bringing certificates from previous elections and some from those who registered recently in preparation for the fresh presidential polls.”
He however assured eligible voters that once the technical glitch is rectified, the line will be in operation until the polling date to give people enough time to verify their names.
He further highlighted that the system also helps resolve cases where people present themselves at wrong centers.
