Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) president Peter Kuwani has demanded disqualification of Peter Mutharika and Dr. Lazarus Chakwera from the presidential poll.
Kuwani is up against Mutharika of Democratic Progressive Party and Chakwera of opposition Malawi Congress Party in Tuesday’s poll.
Kuwani told YFM on Wednesday that he believes that changing of running mates by the aforementioned candidates compromises the Supreme Court of Appeal’s verdict on the contentious May 21, 2019 presidential election.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale told journalists in Blantyre on Wednesday that the commission had received a formal written complaint from Kuwani.
“The ground of his demand for the disqualification is that in accordance with the Judgment of the
Supreme Court of appeal, the candidates ought to have maintained the candidate-runningmate formations,” Kachale said.
He said the Commission will sit to make a determination on the complaint.
Reacting to the development, legal expert, Professor Edge Kanyongolo has questioned the timing of the complaint.
Professor Kanyongolo said Kuwani’s disqualification basis lies on the receipt of nominations.
