Women’s Legal Resource Centre (Wolrec) has commended government for the 39% representation of women in the new cabinet despite most of them being deputy ministers.
Speaking to YFM Executive Director for Wolrec Maggie Kathewere Banda said there is an improvement in representation as compared to the previous regimes.
However, Banda expressed concern over the missing of a line minister in issues of gender equality.
Banda said this will affect the country in terms of measuring progress on issues of gender equality.
Full women in the cabinet are Agnes Nyalonje, who is the minister of education, Patricia Kaliati, who has been appointed minister of community development, minister of health Khumbize Chiponda and minister of forestry Nancy Tembo.
The deputy ministers are Jean Sendeza, Agnes Mkusa Nkhoma, Nancy Mdoko, Chrissy Kanyasho, Madalitso Kambauwa, Halima Daudi, Vela Kantukule and Abida Mia.
