One of the vehicles on Malawi’s Vice President Saulosi Chilima convoy was involved in an accident on Saturday in Balaka leaving four people dead.
The incident happened at Mtima Woyera Parish near Phalula Trading Centre.
Press Officer in the Office of the Vice President, Pilirani Phiri told YFM that the accident involved one vehicle on the convoy which had a head on collision with another vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
Phiri said the vice president’s vehicle was not affected and he is in good state.
Balaka Police Spokesperson, Inspector Felix Misomali, said the deceased were all from the civilian vehicle, a Toyota VX Saloon registration number BW 8173.
He said two of the female passengers died on the spot while one male died upon arrival at Phalula Health Centre and the driver died at Balaka District Hospital.
Inspector Misomali said: “The driver of the Toyota VX lost control of his vehicle due to over speeding as a result he collided with a vehicle on the convoy, a Toyota Land Cruiser, which was driving from the direction of Zalewa heading towards Chingeni.”
The driver of the Toyota Land cruiser, who works in the Office of the Vice President, Willison Chima, sustained multiple cuts on other parts of his body while his passenger, Senior Superintendent Kapheni sustained a painful chest.
The two have been referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, from Balaka District Hospital, for further treatment.
