Mota Engil has demanded payment of over K96 billion from the government in arrears on substantially and completed projects.
A leaked letter addressed to the Roads Authority, Mota Engil indicates that the authority owes it more than K50 billion in arrears in debts which date back to 2008.
The letter signed by the company’s managing director Nuno Antunes has also demanded payment of accrued financing charges estimated to be K48 billion due to delayed payments.
“This means to date a total of estimated value of Ninety-six billion is what is due from all completed contracts,” the statement reads.
Antunes says the company’s operations are currently being affected with some projects being stalled.
“The small payments being made on the suspended contracts are not addressing our root problem as they are not enough to cover our debits and allow normal purchasing of resources required for the current projects,” the statement reads.
Roads Authority Spokesperson Portia Kajanga said government made some payments to Mota Engil in the past months.
