10 inmates and three warders have tested positive for Covid-19 at Nkhata Bay prison.
Malawi Prisons Service spokesperson Chimwemwe Mike Shaba said currently the prisons is in talk with the district’s health office to conduct mass test to prisoners and officers at the prison.
“Indeed some of prisoners and officers have tested positive for the virus and as a way forward we want everyone to be tested for Covid-19,” he explains.
Shaba also said that the first prisoner that tested positive at Chichiri Prison is responding well to the medication.
Many prisons in the country are over-congested a development which puts them at risk during this pandemic.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Prisons Service has suspended relational visits with immediate effect.
