The Mzuzu Resident Magistrate Court has granted bail to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the north Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, DPP’s deputy national director of programs Joe Thomas Nyirongo and three others who are answering violence related charges.
Ngwira is accused of ordering the other men to attack people at a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rally in Mzuzu in 2016 where President Lazarus Chakwera was in attendance.
The suspects have been charged with causing bodily harm, unlawful assembly and proposing violence.
In his ruling, Senior Resident Peter Kandulu ordered that the accused should pay a bail bond of K200,000 each, to bring a blood relation surety in form of witness with K500,000 each.
Speaking to YFM lawyer representing the accused Christone Ghambi said his clients are comfortable with the bail conditions given.
However, Ngwira as of Thursday night was still in police custody because he failed to fulfill his bail cash bond condition.
The case will be back in court on August 21, 2020.
