Angry workers have closed down Likangala Health Centre in Zomba in an attempt to force management to act on long overdue water and electricity challenges at the facility.
A visit at the facility on Friday morning found that both outpatients and women at the maternity ward were not being attended to.
Officials told YFM online on condition of anonymity that the facility has been operating without running water since May this year following theft of a water pump.
They said the facility’s management has been reporting the issues of water and electricity challenges to Zomba District Health Office (DHO) but nothing has been done.
In the absence of running taps, authorities at the health center have been asking guardians to fetch water for facility including its maternity wing.
The facility’s Officer In-Charge Anthony Machemba refused to comment on the matter saying that discussions on the issues with the DHO are underway.
Zomba DHO spokesperson Anord Mndalira expressed ignorance on the closure of the facility.
“There are no such reports at the DHO and l’m only hearing this through the media,” he said.
