Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator for Thyolo Central, Ben Phiri has stepped down from his position as the party’s Director of Elections.
In a letter addressed to the party’s secretary general, Phiri said the resignation is with immediate effect.
Phiri said he has run out of feasible strategies to help the party into another victory and bring back its lost glory after losing the previous presidential election.
“I surely cannot claim to have any fresh and viable strategies to spur the party into another victory having lost the past one,” reads part of the letter.
Phiri said their loss in the previous election is an eye opener to the party and its calls for responsible individuals to step down and pave way for others to take the party forward to another level.
He further said that he has been accused of selling the election to previous parties for his personal gains which he said is defamatory and has led to loss of trust among the party officials among other things.
Phiri was appointed as the director of elections for the party in 2018 by the party’s torch bearer in the 2019 presidential election, Peter Mutharika.
