The Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare says it yet to release a report on the progress of invalidating child marriages in the country.
The line minister Patricia Kaliati made the hint when YFM made a follow-up following an expiry of an ultimatum which the ministry gave to various councils to annul child marriages amidst Covid-19.
“The councils responded to the directive well and we will release a report on the same on 31st August this year,” Kaliati said.
She said that so far Machinga has been outstanding in ensuring that marriages are abolished.
The country registered a sharp increase in cases of child marriages and teenage pregnancies after the closure of schools due to covid-19 pandemic.
In a recent interview with YFM, National coordinator for adolescent’s and Youth SRH program in the ministry of health Hans Katengeza attributed the increase to the suspension of provision of some health services including sexual reproductive health services.
