As one way of reaching out to the elderly with COVID-19 messages, a charitable organisation, My Community My Responsibility (MCMR) has started carrying out awareness and sensitization meetings to elderly people in Lilongwe.
According to MCMR Director Brian Khembo, the elderly are failing to have a better understanding of the deadly pandemic despite mass awareness and sensitization on the same.
“Our initiative aims at giving awareness of COVID-19, its prevention and address the social -economic impact of the pandemic by supporting the elderly with protective materials.
Because we believe that the pandemic can be eradicated if awareness and prevention starts at the community level,” singled out Khembo.
MCMR, together with College of Medicine Development Mentors (Comyods) noted this after donating assorted items to 60 elderly people in Lilongwe`s Mgona Community.
In an interview, Khembo said the organisation thought of embarking on the initiative after getting through challenges that the elderly are going through when it comes to access of COVID-19 related information.
“The distribution of these materials is essential as elderly people will have knowledge about the virus at the same time reducing the spread of it,” said Khembo.
One of the beneficiaries, a 81-year old Robert Chisale said the donation will help her and their families to fight against the virus and preventing them from infecting others.
The items included sugar, laundry soap, and clothes.
