In her sentence, Justice Ruth Chinangwa said the nature of murdering Linda Gasa, which include poisoning and stabbing the deceased four times, clearly indicate how heartless the convict is.
Justice Chinangwa described Chanthunya as a trait of beast.
She also slapped Chanthunya with two years custodial sentence for the second count of hindering burial of a dead body.
“As state we are satisfied with the sentence, that’s what we prayed for in court,” Lead counsel for the State Dr. Steve Kayuni.
But reacting to the sentence, lawyer for Chanthunya, Micheal Goba Chipeta described the imprisonment as unfair.
“Perhaps, this is a perfect example of an unfair trial because the sentence given is contrary to the law that applies to the sentence,”Chipeta said.
He said their decision to appeal still stands.
Late Linda Gasa was murdered in 2010 and buried at the Chanthunya’s Cottage in Mangochi.
Chanthunya was immediately taken to prison to serve his sentences that will run concurrently.
